Chapter Ten

I sat in Red Lobster seated across from Jay with a million and one things weighing heavily on my mind. I was so stressed out that I’d started to stay home instead of agreeing to have dinner with him but Samara felt like me getting out of the house for a while might help me stop stressing so much. Needless to say it wasn’t working.

Jay looked really nice. He was dressed in a pair of dark blue Levi’s with a blue and white Polo sweater. I’d chosen a simple pair of black slacks with a black and tan sweater and a pair of black low-heel boots. I’d pinned my hair up in a cute little updo.

“You look really sexy tonight.” Jay complimented me before eating a piece of his grilled salmon.

“Thanks.”

He sat his fork down and stared at me for a moment. “What’s wrong? You act like you have something on your mind.”

I exhaled, glancing over at him and then looking back down at my food. I moved my food around on my plate with my fork. I didn’t really have much of an appetite. “I don’t want to bore you with my problems.”

“Listen, if I didn’t want to know then I wouldn’t have asked. So tell me what it is that has you looking like you’ve lost your best friend.”

“Hmph, I think losing my best friend would be a lot easier to deal with than what I am dealing with right now.” I laid my fork down and looked over at him. He’d leaned back in his chair and was attentively listening to me. “I feel like I am losing my fifteen year old son. He is out of control! Everything I do and say is wrong! I am at a point where I don’t know what to do!” I shook my head and hurriedly swiped at the tears that had started to fall.

“Hold on ma.” He spoke calmly, his voice filled with concern. “Let me go and holla at the waitress about getting us some to-go boxes and pay the check. That way we can go somewhere else and talk and you don’t have to worry about everybody staring all in your face. I’ll be right back.”

He got up and went to take care of everything. While I waited for him to return I pulled myself together the best that I could. When he returned to the table he had two boxes. After we’d finished boxing our food up, he helped me with my coat. Just as we were about to walk out of the restaurant Mel and Richard were walking in.

“Hey y’all.” I plastered a smile on my face and spoke. “Jay this is my friend Mel and her husband Richard.”

Richard and Jay shook hands. “Nice to meet you.” Jay told Richard. “Likewise.” Richard replied.

“Hello Jay. Nice seeing you again.” Mel said then looked at me. “Hmmph, look at you! I see you changed your mind.”

I was confused. I had so much on my mind that I didn’t even attempt to try and guess what she was talking about.
